Currency and payments
The official currency of Bulgaria is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), and it has a static conversion rate to the Euro, guaranteed by the International Monetary Fund.
While payments by card are accepted in most big grocery stores, restaurants and some taxis, paying by cash is still the default way around here.
Public transport
Public transport in Sofia works from around 05:00 until around 00:00. There are also a few night lines that work between 23:30 and 03:30.
Everywhere in the public transport you can pay by card, no need to buy paper tickets. Price per ticket is 1.60GBN (~0.8€). If you travel a lot or change too many different vehicles, a total price of 4GBN (~2€) per day will be charged from your account, that’s the equivalent of a daily card.
If a public transport inspector shows up (they do that sometimes), just tap the card you paid with to their device and you’re good.
Important – use one card to buy ticket(s) for one person only. If you pay for 2 or more people with one card – it’s either not gonna work, or you will have a problem with the public transport inspector trying to prove how many tickets you paid for.
Metro station validators, pay before you enter. Please note that the ‘payment system’ is located on your left, which might be a bit counter intuitive

Other public transport options (bus, trolley, tram) – pay after you enter. Next to the doors you can see the validators.
